'It Don't Worry Me!' Describes My High-Yield Strategy

In one of my all-time favorite movies, "Nashville," an endearingly goofy country singer wannabe played by Barbara Harris sings a show-stopping number called "It Don't Worry Me." I think of that song a lot as I ponder the potential impact of higher interest rates on the prices of the high-yield securities in my portfolio. Some Seeking Alpha writers have suggested that closed end funds, especially the high-yielding variety many of us prefer, are in for a hard time... Read more

Is It Time To Rotate Out Of High-Yield, Fixed-Income CEFs? Part 2

I want to continue my focus on high-yielding, fixed-income CEFs, a topic I started on last week asking the question: Is It Time To Rotate Out Of High-Yield CEFs? To put the high-yield situation in perspective, here is a look at the two ETFs I sometimes use as benchmarks for high-yield and investment-grade fixed-income: iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bd (NYSEARCA: HYG) and iShares iBoxx $ Invst Grade Crp Bond (NYSEARCA: LQD). First for two years, where we can see the turn-around in high... Read more

Is It Time To Rotate Out Of High-Yield CEFs?

Is it time to rotate out of high-yield CEFs? Fixed-Income The past year has been good to high-yield investors. To illustrate my point, here's a look at the two big high-yield bond ETFs ( iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bd (NYSEARCA: HYG) and SPDR® Blmbg Barclays High Yield Bd ETF (NYSEARCA: JNK)) and one of my personal favorites for high-yield ETFs, VanEck Vectors Fallen Angel HiYld Bd ETF (NYSEARCA: ANGL). For investors in high-yield CEFs (closed-end funds), which... Read more

High Yield CEF 4-Year Total Returns

Reaching for yield almost always ends in disaster. This doesn't mean you have to be happy with 2% Treasuries or 1% CDs, but it does mean prudence, care, and diligence when it comes to finding higher yielding closed-end funds ((CEFs)), especially funds whose income source is junk bonds. There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from managers' inability to earn payouts, depletion of NAV due to fees, bad bets, derivatives, systemic events, and other problems, and declining...
